CLAMEMONT Football Club turned on the power to beat Zimbabwe National Army side, 23 Combat Group to win the inaugural All Arms Battle School fundraising gala.

For their efforts, the team walked away with a kit in a tournament that attracted more than 20 teams mainly from the sleepy tourist resort area. The two-day event attracted thousands of people and was also graced by Deputy Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services as well as Nyanga South legislator, Supa Mandiwanzira.

It drew sponsorship from Nyaradzo Funeral Services, Moonlight Funeral Services, Doves Funeral Services, Perfect Lions Insurance, ZB Bank, Cash Foundations and Foundation Mutual Society which also donated a 55-inch Plasma TV, deep freezer, a set of sofas and a lawnmower to AABS.

Among the participating teams were AABS, ZRP, Tsanga Lodge, Irene Forests, All Stars, OTW, AATW, ZESA, Claremont, Montclaire, 23 Combat Group, Anglers’ Rest, Troutbeck, Tufe Darts Club and Mukungwe Darts Club.

In netball, Anglers’ Rest came out tops and walked away with T-shirts and $40. All Stars were the volleyball champions and received $30, while chess and darts were dominated by ZNA sides, All Arms Training Wing and Officers Training Wing respectively.

The idea of the sporting gala was mooted upon the realisation that there was need to catalyse cordial relationships between the military and the community it operates in.

AABS Commandant, Stanley Mangena, said symbiotic relations between members of the ZNA and the civilians were of paramount importance and sport was a unifying factor.

“Relations between members of the ZNA and the civilians have their roots in the liberation struggle. We were the fish and you were the water.

“We come from different backgrounds and different organisations. We also speak different languages, but today we shall speak one language which is the language of sport,” said Mangena.
