Clean City partners varsities in waste recycling projects

CLEAN City has partnered with Zimbabwe’s universities on recycling projects that will help the institutions of higher learning to maintain a clean environment.

The EcoCash Holdings waste management unit is signing memoranda of understanding with the University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Bindura University of Science Education, Women’s University and Chinhoyi University of Technology offering sustainable and environment-friendly solutions for the campuses.

Lovemore Nyatsine, Clean City’s chief executive, said colleges and universities generate large volumes of waste as they effectively function as small municipalities in many cases, with their own restaurants, stores, medical facilities, residences, gyms and research labs.

To deal with the rising garbage and waste challenges in colleges and universities, Clean City is offering valuable pathways to a green economy.

“Using entrepreneurial approaches and technology, Clean City is deploying smart waste management solutions that help to keep universities’ environments clean and safe while transforming lives in a deep and meaningful way through the creation of business and employment opportunities,” said Mr Nyatsine.

Under the partnerships, Clean City is providing cages and bins for waste collection and recycling services, while the universities help in sorting out the waste and putting it in right collection dumpsters.

Mr Nyatsine said the company was planning to extend the waste collection and recycling services to other colleges and universities across the country as a way of inculcating a waste recycling culture among students.

“Waste management recognises every business has unique needs, which is why we approach each with a personal and collaborative mind set. We don’t just hand out reports; we integrate ourselves within the culture and business operations of various organisations.

“We work with colleges and universities throughout the entire process, from project management and assistance with sustainability programme development and programme implementation, to the measurement of outcomes and overall success,” he added.

The leading provider of comprehensive waste management environmental services in Zimbabwe recently embarked on a Recycling Partnership Initiative to positively impact recycling in households, corporates and public spaces to significantly reduce waste contamination that arises from waste dumping and incineration.

“Our partners across and within industries, understand that they can have a much bigger impact on creating environmental, economic and social change by working together than by working alone. With the support of our partners, we have diverted more than 250 metric tonnes of recyclables from dumpsites which provide ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes, rats and flies,” added Nyatsine.

“Through the waste recycling project, we are keen on providing the facilities to collect recyclable materials from source and strengthen the local value chain to maximise opportunities for both recycling and upcycling,” he said.

Clean City believes in sustainability and supports global initiatives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Its recycling initiative has seen 121 000 kilogrammes of material diverted from dumpsites and changed into irrigation pipes, bin liners, black sheeting and jackets.

The company has also recorded considerable success in empowering communities through recycling by investing more than USD$2 million in instituting a materials recovery centre and 23 community recycling cages.
