Modern joins race for Zifa presidency

OUTGOING Highlanders vice-chairman Modern Ngwenya has set his eyes on the Zifa vice-presidency in next year’s elections.

Ngwenya is likely to square off against another Bosso son Peter Dube.

Ironically the duo worked together as Highlanders’ chairman and vice-chairman respectively before Dube’s shock suspension from football activities by the Phillip Chiyangwa-led Zifa executive committee.

Ngwenya confirmed yesterday that he would be going for the second most powerful football post in the country after learning the ropes in football administration at Highlanders.

“I have decided to make it known that I shall be running for the Zifa vice-presidency next year, as you are aware that I will be constitutionally barred from seeking re-election at Highlanders having served my two terms.

I am a one-man band and wouldn’t want to say I will be having such and such candidate as a running mate. This is what eventually creates cartels and leads to poor corporate governance in organisations. People would have created their own little kingdoms, a boys’ club sort of set-up,” said Ngwenya.

If Ngwenya and Dube eventually come head-to-head, it will almost be a repeat of the 2010 scenario when two former Highlanders’ chairmen Ndumiso Gumede and Kennedy Ndebele squared off for the Zifa vice-presidency, which Gumede eventually won after a run-off to become Cuthbert Dube’s deputy.
