IT was with profound sadness that I learnt of the passing of former goalkeeper Njabulo Nyoni, who was born on March 3, 1980, and whose passion for football began on the dusty grounds of Cement Siding in Bulawayo.
Njabulo belonged to a talented generation of young footballers that included Zephaniah Ngozo, Joel Ngozo, Mawulani Phiri, Ndumiso Khanye, Ntokozo Tshuma, Simon Njeleza, Mthokozisi Msebe, Rodrick Masina and Nelson Masina, among many others, who all dreamed of becoming Cement Siding’s shining stars. Stanley Ngala from Unit Fairbridge was among those who went on to excel from the area.
Njabulo’s football journey started at Cement Siding, where he developed his goalkeeping skills under my guidance and that of Blazio Mdekunye. Together, we helped shape him into a disciplined and talented shot-stopper, laying the foundation for a career defined by commitment, courage and sportsmanship.
Throughout his football career, Njabulo earned admiration for his composure between the posts, determination and unwavering dedication to the game. He remained an inspiration to teammates and aspiring goalkeepers alike.
Beyond the football field, Njabulo will be remembered as a humble, respectful and passionate individual whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations of footballers from smaller communities around Bulawayo and across Zimbabwe.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
