THE National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has confirmed that nine Chinese nationals, who pleaded guilty to using cocaine, are now awaiting deportation after sentencing — and vowed tougher action on future drug cases.
The case sparked widespread public concern, with many questioning the sentence handed down. In response, the NPAZ issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to fair and firm prosecution, stressing that no one is above the law, regardless of nationality or status.
“The NPAZ is committed to ensuring that all individuals are held accountable for their actions in accordance with the laws of Zimbabwe,” the statement read.
The authority also revealed that new measures are being put in place to clamp down on drug-related crimes, including instructions to all public prosecutors to lay the correct charges and push for stiffer penalties going forward.
“This stance is a direct reflection of the direction Zimbabwe has taken to combat drug abuse,” the NPAZ stated.
Cocaine and other hard drugs have become a growing menace, threatening communities and fuelling violent crime.
The NPAZ praised the public’s vigilance in highlighting concerns, saying it reinforces the collective fight against drug abuse.
“We are committed to a future where drug-related offences are met with sentences that truly reflect their gravity,” the statement added.
The nine Chinese nationals remain in custody as authorities finalise deportation procedures.
