THE Heating Energy Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Association of Zimbabwe (HEVACRAZ) has donated air conditioning and refrigeration equipment worth US$10 000 to Harare Polytechnic College.
This is meant to enhance the institution’s engineering workshop.
The new models of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment produce a smaller negative impact on the atmosphere and have lower power consumption than older models.
Speaking during World Refrigeration Day commemorations at Harare Polytechnic, HEVACRAZ chairperson, Cain Manyukwa, said that harmful refrigerants can harm the ozone layer, causing climate change and global warming, leading to skin cancer and eye problems.
“Most of the refrigerators and aircons that are being used in the industry are not energy efficient and use refrigerants, which are chemicals that can harm the ozone layer if they leak or are released into the atmosphere,” he said.
Manyukwa is a former Harare Polytechnic engineering student.
He thanked his former lecturers for giving him the opportunity to sharpen his skills.
Harare Polytechnic principal, Tafadzwa Mudondo, thanked HEVACRAZ for its generous donation and urged students and engineering faculty to make productive use of the donated equipment.
