POPULAR Zimbabwean comedian and social media personality Theophilus Gabriel Chigumira, widely known by his stage name “Mai Clifford”, has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol after he was found to be more than three times over the legal limit.
Chigumira (30), of Vahombe Estate in Harare’s Madokero suburb, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court heard that Chigumira was driving a Mazda Atenza at the Newlands Roundabout along ED Mnangagwa Road when he was stopped by police during a traffic operation.
An alcohol test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 160 milligrams per 100 millilitres, well above Zimbabwe’s prescribed legal limit.
He was fined US$200, or the equivalent in ZiG, payable by July 30, 2026, and was prohibited from driving for six months.
“The accused was fined US$200, or its ZiG equivalent, payable by 30 July 2026. He was also prohibited from driving for six months,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
The NPAZ warned that impaired driving remains a serious threat to public safety.
“Impaired driving poses a serious threat to the safety of all road users. The Authority will continue to prosecute offenders in line with the law to promote safer roads and prevent avoidable road traffic tragedies,” said the NPAZ.
