POPULAR comedian and Umahlekisa Entertainment director, Ntando Van Moyo has encouraged peace and calm among the electorate and those in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) as the nation gears for the harmonised elections next week Wednesday.
Moyo might be in the business of making people laugh, but he did not mince his words on Heroes’ Day at the Hope City Centre in Bulawayo at an event dubbed, “Heroes of the Ballot”.
“As we head towards August 23, I urge peace and calm before, during and after casting the ballot. Most of the time, people get carried away and we are here tonight to urge people to vote and exercise their constitutional right in peace.
“We’re creatives and in unison, shun tribalism and undermining each other on tribal grounds. Vote for whoever you want, but do that peacefully. Be heroes and heroines of the ballot,” he said.
Experience met youth as old horses, as well as a new breed of laugh-a-minutes from Harare and Bulawayo, formed a beeline to perform and make sure that no rib was left uncracked.
A considerable number of patrons attended the event bordered on promoting peace among the electorate.
From politics, social issues as well as religious matters, comedians teed off, leaving a trail of broken ribs at their wake.
The line-up of Zwe Hlabangana, Ckanyiso Dat Guy, Black Rose, Nkosi King, Chichie ThePoeticQueen, Simbarashe, Mbongeni Ignatius, Chipenzi The Comedian, and Doc Vikela also paid homage to other fallen heroes of the comedy circle as well as those who have left the scene on their own volition.
Case in point was the special mention of the late Clive “Yeye” Chigubhu as well as Carl Joshua Ncube who recently announced his retirement from the game with his swansong gig, “Cancel Carl” drawing near.
In attendance were other creatives such as musician Junior Garnet, author Nonduduzo Ncube, and theatrical stalwart Daniel Maphosa. – @MbuleloMpofu
