BULAWAYO socialite and comedian Babongile Sikhonjwa’s condition is reportedly stable although he is still admitted in the Intensive Care Unit at Mpilo Hospital.
Sikhonjwa was involved in an accident in the early hours of Monday morning with fellow comedian Clive Chigubu and a friend.
Family spokesperson Gibson Ncube said Sikhonjwa was responding well to medication.
“He is now in a stable condition, he is much better than on Monday, he can open his eyes, identify people and respond using sign language. The extent of his injuries is still yet unknown as we are hoping that tests would be conducted tomorrow,” said Ncube.
He said, however, he has visible bruises on his hands, back and head.
“On Monday he had a swollen face but now it has gone down although he cannot speak at the moment but he is smiling a lot like he used to before the accident,” said Ncube.
Hospital sources on Monday told Chronicle Sikhonjwa could have suffered punctured lungs and broken ribs.
Ncube said soon after the accident Sikhonjwa was heard saying “eish ama events abantu awe festive season ke? (What will I do with people who booked me for events?) This shows that he still had his sense of humour even during the tragic incident”.
His friends said that the humorous Babongile had been booked as Master of Ceremonies for a wedding on Monday the day he was admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital, as well as the Kalawa Jazmee Homecoming show at Queens Sports Club tomorrow.
Ncube paid tribute to friends, family and Sikhonjwa’s fans for their support during this trying time.
“We would like to thank people for their support and prayers. It is sad that only relatives are allowed to see him because doctors say that he has to get as much rest as possible but we really appreciate all the messages and prayers,” said Ncube.
Sikhonjwa, who was driving a Mercedes Benz C230, reportedly failed to negotiate the bend at a fly-over, resulting in the vehicle hitting a lamp post before overturning.
Unconfirmed reports say the airbag pushed him out of the rear window while Chigubu was also thrown out of the car.
Chigubu was treated and discharged and is nursing injuries from home.
The trio was coming from the DJ Zinhle show at Horizon when they were involved in an accident on their way to the western suburbs.
