BULAWAYO comedians have promised a hilarious show tomorrow at the Umahlekisa Comedy Nights 1st Anniversary Celebrations slated for Horizon Pub and Grill. The celebrations mark a year in which the Umahlekisa Comedy Nights began and nine stand-up comedians will be out to crack ribs.
In an interview director of the show, Ntando Van Moyo said Nama outstanding comedian winner Simba the Comic King will be in attendance.
“There were two acts from Harare that will join their Bulawayo compatriots namely Simba the Comic King and Doc Vikela. It will be a night filled with laughter,” he said.
He said they were putting final touches to the venue.
“We are putting up projectors at the venue so that others can watch the comedians without jostling for front-row seats. I warn those who come that they will laugh until they feel pain,” he said.
Van Moyo said the comedy nights and the appreciation of stand-up comedy was steadily growing.
“The comedy nights have been growing and we want to continue them and develop the art of stand-up comedy. The reason for their inception was to give young talented comedians a platform to show their art and grow,” he said.
Other comics are Long John, Allen Marshal, Keith Zaks and HO. Clive Chigubu and Van Moyo have proved that they are in a league of their own, as they leave a trail of “cracked ribs” wherever they perform. The “First Lady” of Bulawayo comedy Nomsa Muleya has proved that she can hold her own during her debut show in January.
Umahlekisa Comedy Nights was founded by Van Moyo in March last year. This was upon realisation that stand-up comedy was growing in Harare and nothing was being done in the city.
Appreciation of the shows has significantly grown in recent months and has motivated young comics to line up more shows.
