ZIMBABWE Prisons and Correctional Service Commissioner-General, Moses Chihobvu’s wife, Marian, yesterday partnered with chaplain, Christine Phiri, to help empower inmates at Chikurubi Female Prison.
Marian told inmates that they were being rehabilitated to learn good morals and equip themselves with general hand skills.
These skills included the making of dish washer and soap.
“As we all know that we are in the month of October, I have come here to empower us so that we do not struggle for survival.
“Most women come to this place because of domestic issues that include poverty and hunger, and thus I have come here to teach you general hand jobs,” she said.
The inmates were also taught how to make Vaseline cream and hand bags.
She also indicated that she would be making monthly visits to check on inmates and continue empowering them.
“I will be coming here more frequently to check on you, and also push some of you to do good things and live a righteous lives.
“As mothers, you should be caregivers, not offenders.
“I urge you to take this seriously. You will thank me after you leave this place,” she said
In an interview, Chaplain Phiri advised the inmates to continue praying because God can change any situation.
“I was arrested a couple of times and that taught me to be a good person.
“My Chaplain those days inspired me to become who I am.
“So, do not take this as a prison, but another chance to a better life,” she said.
