COMMENT: A SHIELD AGAINST VOLATILITY

IN an era of global uncertainty, where geopolitical tremors in the Middle East send shockwaves through the wallets of ordinary citizens in distant lands, the true test of a government is its ability to act swiftly and decisively to insulate its people.

The Government of Zimbabwe, through the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA), has passed this test with flying colours.

The recent nationwide compliance blitz targeting fuel service stations that overcharge consumers is not merely a regulatory exercise; it is a powerful statement of intent. It demonstrates that this administration is not content to simply announce policy changes and hope for the best. Instead, it is deploying the full force of the law to ensure that the benefits of global market corrections reach the very people who need them most.

When ZERA announced the downward revision of fuel prices, with Diesel 50 dropping to US$1.99 per litre and Blend E20 to US$1.98, it was not just an economic adjustment; it was a promise. A promise that the Government would follow through to ensure that this relief was not hijacked by unscrupulous traders looking to maintain inflated profit margins.

This proactive stance is particularly commendable given the volatile global context. The recent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping arteries, sent crude oil prices soaring, threatening to destabilise economies far beyond the Middle East. Yet, where other nations scrambled to react, Zimbabwe prepared.

The Government’s decision to transition to a bi-weekly fuel price review mechanism during this turbulent period is a masterclass in agile governance. It ensures that our local prices are not a lagging indicator of global trends but a responsive reflection of reality.

However, the Government’s foresight extends far beyond reactive price adjustments. The raft of measures implemented to cushion citizens, from maintaining strategic fuel reserves to reviewing fuel taxes and increasing ethanol blending from E5 to E20, shows a deep understanding of the interconnected nature of our economy. Fuel is not just a commodity; it is the lifeblood of transport, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. By stabilising its cost, the Government is indirectly stabilising the cost of bread, the cost of transport, and the cost of production.

This is the kind of holistic governance that lays the foundation for economic resilience. While critics may argue that the effects of these reductions are not instant, we are already seeing the groundwork laid for a broader economic easing.

Furthermore, by engaging in this crackdown, the Government is sending a clear message to the business community: profiteering at the expense of the public will not be tolerated. The requirement for service stations to prominently display fuel prices is a simple yet effective tool for transparency, empowering consumers to become participants in the enforcement of fair trade.

We must applaud Energy and Power Development Minister, July Moyo, and the entire ZERA team for their vigilance. In a world where global oil markets are driven by speculation and conflict, they have provided a buffer zone for

Zimbabweans. They have proven that while we cannot control the storms of the Middle East, we can certainly build a shelter for our people.

As we navigate the remaining uncertainties of the international oil market, we are comforted knowing that we have a Government that is not merely a spectator of global events but a proactive protector of its citizens.

This compliance blitz is more than just about fuel; it is about the promise of a government that listens, acts, and protects. It is governance that deserves our unwavering support.
