The fight against Covid-19 needs all hands on deck and we cannot afford any slip-ups at this point when our confirmed cases seem to have stabilised.
We should not leave it to the law enforcement agents and health authorities to tackle the pandemic but join hands with them and see what role we can play towards pushing the infections back. Gatherings have been banned around the country, hence the closure of entertainment areas and churches. In fact, we have seen congregants being arrested in some of the churches that defied the Government ban on gatherings.
Being your brother’s keeper means that you are alert to even the happenings in your neighbourhood since failure to raise the alarm could come back to haunt you one day. We say this because it seems there are places that sell beer under the guise of holding parties. This is an illegal practice whose repercussions would not spare anyone should one of the participants be positive to Covid-19.
We are aware that towards the opening of schools each term, there are groups of youth that are notorious for holding Vuzu parties where wild drinking, group sex and sale of drugs is normally the order of the day. If you thought the wild parties were gone courtesy of Covid-19 and the closure of schools, well, think again.
We hear one such party was raided by police in one of Bulawayo’s leafy suburbs and a score of youths arrested for contravening lockdown regulations. We will leave the legal implications to the law enforcement arms. Our focus is on the pandemic. It would seem there are groups of people that are pre-occupied with making money at the expense of the health of the nation. We are in an emergency and any laxity in enforcing the law might spell disaster for the nation of Zimbabwe.
It is our hope that the individuals caught at the notorious parties in the city have been subjected to screening and put under surveillance for Covid-19. It would be sad if somewhere along the line we have many cases sprouting from these suburbs, and then have the public told that it was local transmission and that the individuals had not been anywhere when in actual fact they have been mixing and mingling, sharing beer, drugs, girls and boys while much of the country tries to barricade itself from the encroaching danger of Covid-19. Blow the whistle and save lives.
We rely on residents to give the authorities information on any illegalities, especially such activities that threaten our health as a country. Let us play our part now and expose these violators of the law because if we look the other way, once the disease spreads, there shall be nowhere to hide. Together we can beat Covid-19.
