THE National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) deserves commendation for its decisive action to bolster security across its infrastructure by deploying newly trained security personnel.
This initiative is not merely about safeguarding property; it is a strategic investment in the revival of a critical national asset that underpins Zimbabwe’s economic aspirations. Rail transport remains the backbone of industrialisation and trade.
Every locomotive that moves goods efficiently reduces pressure on our roads, lowers transport costs and enhances competitiveness for local businesses. NRZ’s infrastructure — tracks, signalling systems, locomotives and cargo facilities — represents billions of dollars in national wealth. Protecting these assets is, therefore, not optional; it is imperative.
For years, vandalism, copper cable theft, and illegal mining along railway servitudes have crippled operations, disrupted cargo movement, and inflated maintenance costs. These criminal activities do not only harm NRZ — they harm the entire economy.
When trains stop moving, industries suffer delays, exporters miss deadlines, and consumers pay more for goods. By strengthening security, NRZ is defending the arteries of commerce that feed Zimbabwe’s growth.
The deployment of 59 disciplined and well-trained security officers marks a turning point. These officers, equipped with skills in surveillance, statutory law and unarmed defence, will serve as the first line of defence against sabotage and theft. Their presence sends a clear message: NRZ is reclaiming its strategic role in regional and national logistics.
This move also aligns with Vision 2030 and the Second Republic’s industrialisation agenda. A secure railway system attracts investment, supports mining and agriculture exports, and positions Zimbabwe as a competitive transit hub in Southern Africa. Furthermore, the integration of modern security measures — such as drone surveillance and motorcycle patrols — demonstrates NRZ’s commitment to innovation and operational resilience.
Critically, protecting NRZ property is not just for the benefit of the parastatal; it is for the nation. Every metre of track preserved, every cable secured, and every locomotive protected translates into economic stability, job creation and foreign currency earnings.
It ensures that Zimbabwe’s logistics network remains reliable, reducing dependency on costly road transport and mitigating environmental impact.
We applaud NRZ for recognising that security is the foundation of progress. This initiative must be supported by all stakeholders — Government, communities, and law enforcement — to ensure that the railways remain a safe and efficient lifeline for Zimbabwe’s economy. In safeguarding its assets, NRZ is safeguarding national development.
