COMMENT: Zimbabweans must maintain peace

Zimbabweans must maintain peace.

In the face of social media calls for illegal protests tomorrow, the Government, has issued a strong call for citizens to remain calm and go about their daily lives.

This call, echoed by various Government officials, is a significant attempt to ensure that the narrative surrounding these illegal protests does not spiral out of control.

The message is clear: peace and stability are paramount, and the Government is committed to maintaining order.

The calls for protests have been labelled by Government officials as the work of cyber terrorists utilising social media to spread misinformation and incite unrest.

Minister Muswere’s assurance that law enforcement is prepared to handle any disruptions speaks to the Government’s readiness to exercise authority.

The Government’s stance is fortified by assurances from various ministers, including Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe, who declared that peace prevails in Zimbabwe.

The argument here is that any perceived unrest is orchestrated by a fringe group intent on destabilising the country.

The business community has also joined the chorus of voices urging citizens to disregard protest calls. Business leaders, including representatives from the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce and various transport associations, have emphasised the importance of maintaining normalcy in operations.

The sentiment is that unrest not only threatens stability but also jeopardises livelihoods. Mr Louis Herbst, a businessman, articulated this well, stating, “The potential for unrest can create an atmosphere of uncertainty.”

This perspective underscores the intertwined nature of socio-economic stability.

Businesses thrive in environments where predictability reigns, and any disruption could have ripple effects throughout the economy. Thus, the alignment of business interests with the government’s position against protests can be seen as a safeguard for economic activity.

As Zimbabwe approaches the potential protests, the Government’s call for calm is both a necessary measure for maintaining order and a reminder that the country puts security first ahead of everything.

It is essential for the Government to foster a political environment where citizens feel safe to go about their business without any fear.
