hold your breath: The long-awaited showdown between Highlanders and Scottland FC, IS HERE

Fungai Muderere, Senior Sports Reporter

AS Zimbabwe holds its breath, Highlanders’ historic showdown against Scottland FC at Barbourfields Stadium this afternoon is no longer just a football match — it is a battle of identity, legacy and an explosion of traditional loyalties in Zimbabwean football.

Behind the tackles and tactics lies a deeper story: Ithimu Yezwe Lonke carrying the weight of generations of fans scattered across the globe; fractured football dreams facing an “up start” steeped in its own fight for recognition.

This is more than a friendly match — it is a reckoning. Is this the passing of the baton from yesteryear’s glory team, Highlanders, to the newcomers, Scottland FC?

Or will Zimbabwe’s traditional football giants teach the new boys a lesson?

For weeks, the Zimbabwean media has dissected every possible angle — from squad selections to financial power — but the untold story is how this match has become a reflection of Zimbabwean football’s resilience.

Highlanders, a club with a rich 99-year history, now stands as the unlikely flag bearer for other traditional giants like Dynamos and Caps United.

It may be the first bastion against Scottland FC, which unapologetically seeks to change the pecking order of Zimbabwean football.

If Bosso fall this afternoon, the other giants may topple like dominoes before a financial sound, rampaging Scottland FC that is seeking relevance in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) and aiming to win the title in their maiden season.

The importance of the outcome is impossible to ignore. With Bosso’s recent suspension from Fifa casting a long shadow, we can reveal that a new look Bosso side, that is likely to parade centreback Marlvin Hativagoni, returnee Never Rauzhi and Tendai Muvuti among other players, can carry an invisible burden: they are not just representing a club, but a legion of devoted supporters hungry for redemption.

Bosso lost four key players — Peter Muduhwa, Lynoth Chikuhwa, Godfrey Makaruse and Marvelous Chigumira all to Scottland.

And as kick-off looms, one question lingers — can this David vs Goliath clash ignite a fire that forces the world to take notice of Zimbabwean football once more?

Bosso concluded their week-long camp in Beitbridge last Sunday with victories over Bishopstone and Dulibadzimu in friendly matches.

They triumphed 8-0 against Bishopstone, with braces from Nigel Banda, Rauzhi, Muvuti, Nqobile Ndlovu and Gillian Nyathi.

Against Dulibadzimu, Brighton “MaNinja” Ncube scored a brace, to secure a 2-1 win for Bosso.
