The Crime Consultative Committee consists of the police, the army, community members, the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, and Masvingo City
Council, among others. Its mandate is to oversee the rate of crime and find strategies on how to combat crime within the district of Masvingo.
During festivities like Easter, there are many incidents of burglary, rape, murder, among many ills committed in the province and the crime committee has warned against potential perpetrators of crime to stop committing crime as the police and community would not sit on their laurels when their belongings were unlawfully taken, daughters raped and people maimed.
In an interview on the sidelines of the committee’s first review meeting in Masvingo last week, the chairperson, Dr Fredrick Kasese, said the police and other supporting structures in the province would be more vigilant enough to thwart any attempts to cause mayhem through engaging in criminal activities.
He said those who were bent on causing discord in the community would be dealt with accordingly and strategies towards the creation of a crime-free society were already in place.
“We are not going to tolerate any criminal activities and those bent on causing unnecessary problems during the holiday. These holidays should be celebrated in peace and the committee members are geared to create a crime-free holiday which does not have fatal accidents.
“Police will be in full force on all our roads and we urge the transport operators, especially their drivers, to co-operate with traffic police officers whose mandate is to ensure that there are no accidents on our roads.
“Motorists should desist from speeding for this has caused loss of precious lives. We don’t expect to have drunken drivers on our roads,” said Dr Kasese.
He said visitors were also expected to behave as they were not going to be absolved if they dared commit crime.
“We are going to have visitors from other countries and we want to assure them total peace and tranquility during their stay in our province. However, they also should behave responsibly and not engage in criminal activities. Our law enforcement agents will not hesitate to bring them to book when they are found on the wrong side of
the law. We also have our children based outside the country and would want to come at this time. Some of them may have been thriving on crime out there and we want to warn them that they would be under surveillance, and that any mischief they will find themselves in police custody,” he said.
Easter holidays for this year begin on Good Friday, 6 April and run up to Easter Monday on 9 April 2012.
