THE Budiriro community took a courageous stand against drug and substance abuse by exposing a drug base at Currency Shopping Centre.
The base was being used to sell drugs and was also a brothel.
Community members appealed to the police to take decisive action.
“We urge you to demolish that shelter,” one resident said.
“It’s a haven for drug dealers and our children’s lives are at risk because of them.”
Concerns were raised about individuals running the brothel, who engage in violent turf battles.
“These men claim they have political connections and insist that the police are aware of their operations,” another resident said.
“It’s alarming to see this being allowed to continue, especially when these fights leave people injured.”
Another resident said:
“This place has become a criminal hub. If it remains, our children’s future is at stake.”
Assistant Inspector Faith Mapisa, the Harare deputy provincial police spokesperson, hailed the community.
“We are aware of the issues reported during our campaign in Budiriro,” she said.
“Investigations are underway and we promise to increase police visibility in the area, both day and night.”
