Bulawayo police have arrested a local couple, Mr Sipho Kunene and Ms Reginah Mliswa, on allegations of inciting indecent behaviour and harbouring and promoting LGBTQI activities.
The couple allegedly used their Waterford home, where they operate an unregistered bed and breakfast facility, to host an illegal party.
According to a police statement, the arrest follows complaints that on Sunday, 10 August, the couple held a party at their residence attended by members of the LGBTQI community.
They were arrested last Thursday (11 September)
“Investigations revealed that the couple used their Waterford house, which serves as an unregistered bed and breakfast, to host a party for members who were identified as belonging to the LGBTQI community. This activity is considered illegal under current laws and social norms,” said the statement.

A neighbour, who preferred to remain anonymous, disclosed how the community first became aware of the gathering.
“Initially, we were alerted by our children who noticed an unusual party taking place at the couple’s residence. When we investigated, we confirmed the event was happening. Concerned about the nature of the gathering, we reported the couple to an anti-gay movement operating in the city,” the neighbour said.
The neighbour revealed that their opposition was rooted in protecting community values rather than targeting the couple personally.
“All we were against was the couple spreading loose morals among our children and within the community. We want to ensure that our children grow up in a safe and morally upright environment.”
The couple remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to enforcing laws related to public morality and have urged community members to report any activities perceived as contravening these standards.
