HIGHLANDERS midfielder Mthulisi Maphosa has been sentenced to perform 75 hours of community service at ZRP Western Commonage and ordered to pay $50 fine for assaulting his girlfriend’s friend and her boyfriend.
He will spend 30 days behind bars if he fails to pay the fine.

Three quarters of Bosso players were dragged into a sex scandal after Maphosa told a court last week that he assaulted Amanda Mbuisa, a friend to his girlfriend, Nobuhle Nkomo on Saturday last week, claiming she was a bad influence who had bedded nearly all his teammates.

On Monday Maphosa, 31, appeared before magistrate Tancy Dube who found him guilty of assaulting Mbuisa and her boyfriend Bongani Rabvu with fists and also by headbutting them.

“I find you guilty of assaulting Mbuisa and Rabvu with fists and headbutting them. If you had used bricks as they claimed, the medical affidavit would have proved it. There’s a difference between someone who was assaulted by bricks and someone assaulted by fists. Your defence holds more water than the complainants’ accusations,” she said.

Maphosa told the court that he is a married father of twins.

He assaulted the couple for bringing his girlfriend home late.

“I’m a married man with two kids, a set of twins. What I did was a terrible mistake and I’ll never do it again. I’ve learnt my lesson,” said Maphosa.

The former Zimbabwe Saints, Monomotapa and FC Platinum player said he once bedded Mbuisa, 22, whom he claimed also had sex with about three quarters of Bosso players.

Maphosa said he assaulted Mbuisa because she was influencing his girlfriend into prostitution.

His allegations come at a time when serious indiscipline has been reported in the Highlanders camp, with reports suggesting that some players were taking intoxicating substances and engaged in late night beer binges.

In court, prosecutor Kenneth Shava said Maphosa assaulted Rabvu and Mbuisa using bricks, fists and then headbutted them.

“Maphosa assaulted Rabvu and Mbuisa by hitting them with bricks after they brought his girlfriend, Nobuble Nkomo, home late,” he said.

The court heard that during the night of October 4, Maphosa was waiting for Nkomo at her home when his girlfriend arrived home in a vehicle at around 11PM in the company of Mbuisa and her boyfriend, Rabvu.

The three were coming from clubbing in the city centre.

Maphosa became furious and asked Mbuisa what she was doing with his girlfriend in the late hours of the night. The Bosso star then accused Mbuisa of being a prostitute and a bad influence to his girlfriend.

He then assaulted Mbuisa and her boyfriend with bricks and headbutted them, the prosecution said. Rabvu ran away, leaving Mbuisa at Maphosa’s mercy.

They sustained some injuries and were referred to hospital.

This was not the first time that Maphosa has been caught on the wrong side of the law.

In 2011, Maphosa was arrested for attempted murder after stabbing a soldier. The matter was later settled out of court. Last year, the player who has earned himself the bad-boy tag, was involved in a bar brawl in Matshobana where he hit the bouncers with a baton.
