A 74-year-old Bulawayo resident, James Chipunza, has taken it upon himself to fill potholes in the Northvale area, showcasing remarkable community spirit and determination.
Despite his age, Elder Chipunza has been tirelessly working to make his neighbourhood roads safer and more navigable for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Motivated by the struggles of drivers and pedestrians, Mr Chipunza started filling potholes with soil and rubble, often relying on his neighbours for materials.
“I feel for the drivers when they are struggling to drive past these potholes and how the cars are being affected. Also when it rains motorists drive through the potholes and splash the water on pedestrians. I wish I can do more but I lack the materials,” said Mr Chipunza.
His efforts have made a significant difference, allowing cars to move smoothly through the area. While some drivers have shown appreciation for his work, others have ignored him.
Mr Chipunza’s story highlights the power of individual action and community spirit.
Despite lacking resources and professional expertise, he has made a tangible impact on his community. His selflessness serves as an inspiration, proving that anyone can make a difference, regardless of age or circumstances.
Many in the community are now rallying behind Mr Chipunza. Local authorities and organisations could support his efforts by providing materials and resources to help him cover more areas.
