Computer Society of Zimbabwe pledges to train 10 k teachers to boost AI, digital literacy

THE Computer Society of Zimbabwe has announced an ambitious plan to train 10 000 teachers in the country in digital literacy, artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and cybersecurity awareness.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to prepare Zimbabwe’s education system for rapid technological adoption.

Speaking during a recent presentation in Harare, CSZ chief executive officer Ms Viola Dondo said it was important to equip teachers with the skills to guide students safely and responsibly in the digital age.

“We are committed to train 10 000 teachers in the country,” she said.

“Last year we started, but this year we want to be different. We went around the provinces, we saw the need, and we are committed to bringing change and transformation in all those areas.”

The programme will also focus on AI ethics, digital safety and organisational AI policy frameworks, ensuring that students not only learn how to use technology but also understand the responsibilities that come with it.

Ms Dondo also said it was urgent to protect children online.

“Nowadays we are hearing gadgets for everyone, gadgets left for every child,” she said.

“The child online safety policies really need to go out and protect our children. Adults still have to be protected, but children will be left behind, and it is quite scary if we continue on this trajectory without safeguards.”

The society’s teacher training in the country initiative is part of a larger goal to enhance Zimbabwe’s position in the regional digital skills landscape, measured alongside countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

“This year we were put as a key market in digital skills under ICDL and we will be measured against Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda,” Ms. Dondo said.

“We need to do something and we are committing to seeing all these things happening so that we can continue to rise as we are measured against those other markets.

“With the country accelerating its adoption of AI and digital tools, CSZ’s commitment to teacher training in the country could play a critical role in preparing the next generation for a technology-driven future.”
