Addressing journalists in Mutare last week, National Association of Societies for the Care of the Handicapped executive director Mr Farai Mukuta said according to recent reports by the World Health
Organisation and World Bank, countries are losing money by excluding people with disabilities.
“When people with disabilities are denied employment they are thrown into perpetual poverty. Nearly 30 percent of the countries’ gross domestic product is lost through the exclusion of people with disabilities.
“The focus should be on recognising people with disabilities as citizens with rights and abilities, and on empowering them to take charge of their destiny as adults who can take part in social and economic life.”
He said the visually impaired are not problems but are affected by negative attitudes.
“There is need for change of mindset, there are intelligent writers among the visually impaired and some of them are very good journalists compared to any other persons.”
