Government has completed the construction of Zibagwe Bridge near Chivhu, and the resurfacing of a road leading from the town to the bridge, at a combined cost of $3,5 million.
Speaking during a tour of the road and the bridge yesterday, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Joram Gumbo said they would both be commissioned in March.
He said the construction of the bridge and the resurfacing of the road were done in an effort to increase trade between Manicaland and Mashonaland East, especially for farmers.
Minister Gumbo told journalists that Government was prioritising infrastructure development because it was in tandem with Zim-Asset goals of empowering people.
He said after touring most of the country’s roads recently, he realised that they were in bad shape and required urgent atten- tion.
“This is an important link between Mashonaland East and Manicaland, as this road actually connects Chivhu, which is in Mashonaland East, and Nyazura, which is in Manicaland,” said Minister Gumbo.
“We hope (that) after the completion of this road, we can as well start working on the connection between Murambinda and Birchenough Bridge.
“This will bring the connection that we need and our people need, as there is business in farming and mining.”
Asked on the winning tender for the dualisation of the Beitbridge-Harare and Harare-Chirundu highways, Minister Gumbo said Government would reveal the winners in due course.
The dualisation costs of the highways range between $1,5 billion and $2 billion, including the construction of the Harare ring road.
