A policewoman yesterday told a court that her husband who is also a policeman lost his salary to thieves while drunk. Liswell Muguti told a Harare Civil Court where she was seeking US$300 as maintenance from her husband Kenrod Tafirenyika for the upkeep of their three children.
“We have three children and are employed as police officers. I want US$300 for the upkeep of our three children because he does not buy food at home.
“He spends his salary on beer and last month thieves stole his whole salary and cell phone while he was drunk. His home is the bar where he spends all his money and comes home at sunrise,” said Muguti. In his defence, Tafirenyika said he could adjust the way he lives and would support his family.
“I can afford US$60 for the three children and she can use something from her salary since she works. She stayed at home for some years before I organised a job for her meaning she has to play a bigger part on the children’s upkeep.
“She earns US$408 despite the fact she is servicing a loan. Last month I did not lose money to thieves, but I owed someone money whom I repaid,” Tafirenyika said.
Tafirenyika told the court that he was willing to change the way he lives and get home early. Presiding magistrate Mr Milton Serima ordered Tafirenyika to pay US$180 towards the upkeep of the three children starting from October 30.
