A four-year-old toddler from Selous was last Saturday fatally struck by a commuter omnibus while crossing the road at the 82-kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.Mashonaland West Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the incident, saying investigations were in progress.
Insp Mabgweazara appealed to members of the public who might have information that could lead to the arrest of the commuter omnibus driver who fled from the scene after killing the toddler.
“We received a report following the death of Filton Chaparadza of Plot 1 French Farm who was fatally hit by a green Toyota Sprinter and the driver fled from the scene.
“We are appealing to members of the public who might have information that can link us to arrest the driver of the commuter omnibus to report at any nearest police station,” he said.
It is alleged that on October 5 at around 5pm the unknown commuter omnibus driver was travelling from Harare to Chegutu along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.
On approaching the 82km peg, the driver started overtaking another vehicle at the same time when Chaparadza was crossing the road.
It is reported that Chaparadza was hit by the speeding commuter omnibus and died on the spot and the driver fled.
Saruwe police attended the scene and took the body to Chegutu Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
