A POLICEMAN was yesterday jailed for assaulting a suspect after an altercation at the charge office.

Liberty Ndagurwa was convicted after a full trial by Harare magistrate Noticia Shenje.

He was sentenced to three months imprisonment which were wholly suspended on condition that he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.

He was also ordered to pay a fine of                          $20 000, failure of which he would be locked up for two months.

The court heard that on October 8, the complainant, Nicholas Semu, and his alleged accomplice, Rueben Chipendo, were arrested for theft and taken to Milton Park Police Station where Ndagurwa was on duty.

While in the charge office, Ndagurwa had an altercation with Samu after he indicated that his friend Chipendo was not a thief.

Ndagurwa punched Samu leaving him with serious injuries.

Ndagurwa initially denied the allegations, claiming he never assaulted Samu.

Belinda Chimuka appeared for the State.
