pleaded not guilty to bribery charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Tsatsawani Ndaba.
Ms Ndaba sentenced him to 18 months before six were suspended on condition of good behaviour. Another one month was suspended on condition Zuva restitutes Mosby Mbano US$50.
In passing the sentence Ms Ndaba said Zuva’s moral blameworthiness was high.
“Corruption is high in the police force which in turn tarnishes their image. Government has since condemned corruption and a fine will trivialise the justice delivery system and a community service will send a wrong message to the public.
“He was gainfully employed and he committed the crime out of greed. The public is now losing confidence in the police force because of such behaviour,” she said.
Prosecutor Ms Patience Chimusaru proved that on January 21 and at the intersection of Chinhoyi and Bank streets in Harare, Mbano parked his Toyota Ipsum taxi looking for clients.
He was arrested by Harare City Traffic enforcement officers for dangerous parking before they ordered him to drive to Harare Central stores yard situated along Coventry Road in Workington.
The enforcement officers handed Mbano to Zuva for documentation and further management before he was confined in a commuter omnibus together with several other traffic offenders.
While inside Zuva demanded a US$50 bribe in exchange for freedom which Mbano borrowed from his friend identified as Ruth Kondowe and gave it to him.
On January 22, Mbano made a report to the police leading to Zuva’s arrest.
