TWO copper cable thieves targeting Zesa Holdings infrastructure in and around Mt Hampden have been arrested, while another man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a similar offence.
The suspects, Ben Zvinaishe (27) and Tellmore Broom (24), were arrested for allegedly violating the Electricity Act [Chapter 13:19], which criminalises the cutting, damaging, destroying or interfering with apparatus used in the generation, transmission, distribution or supply of electricity.
Criminal Investigations Department (CID) spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri said the two were arrested on August 16, 2026, after detectives received information about people allegedly digging and cutting copper cables at Stamford Farm in Mt Hampden around 3 pm.
“The team quickly reacted to the information and proceeded to the scene where they found the suspects digging and cutting armoured copper cable,” she said.
“The suspects fled but were arrested after a chase. The duo has since appeared in court where they were remanded in custody pending trial.”
In a related matter, Takudzwa Mukanzo (22) was on August 14, 2026, convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for similar charges.
The conviction follows his arrest on August 13, 2026, when an alert member of the public observed Mukanzo together with his accomplice, who is still at large, digging copper cables in the Southerton area of Harare.
Police officers attended the scene, leading to his arrest.
He appeared before Magistrate Mr Tawodzera Zishiri at Mbare Magistrate’s Court, where he was sentenced to 10 years in jail.
Ms Joyline Jere appeared for the State.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police continue to warn members of the public against vandalism of public utilities and infrastructure. Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and play their part in safeguarding public utilities and infrastructure,” said Insp Muteweri.
