Cops confirm double drowning

TWO people drowned in Masvingo between Saturday and Sunday, police confirmed yesterday.

Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula said Isley Mudengudze (11) of Chezhara Village under Chief Murinye drowned while attempting to cross a flooded Nyazwiwi River on Saturday at around 6PM while Leopold Mutandavari (19) of Chirongoma Village under Chief Mugabe drowned in Mutirikwi Dam while fishing on Sunday at around 7AM.

“We have received two reports of sudden death by drowning which occurred at the weekend.

“The first one involved a boy who attempted to cross a flooded river and was swept away while the other one involved a man who drowned while fishing in a dam,” said Insp Mazula.

Isley’s body was found downstream and retrieved by villagers while Mutandavari’s body was found floating in the dam by his mother, Ms Batsirayi Chikaka.

Police said members of the public continue to cross flooded rivers despite their repeated warnings.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said it was disheartening to note that lives were being lost in circumstances that could be avoided.
