‘Cops’ make off with US$28 000

on him after posing as policemen.
One member of the gang, Richard Timba (40) has since been arrested and appeared in court, while his accomplices were still at large.

The trio pretended to be policemen and produced police identity cards before ‘arresting’ Mike Chiyangwa whom they accused of dealing in drugs.
Timba was yesterday not asked to plead to armed robbery charges when he appeared before Harare Magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei.
He was remanded in custody to December 5 and was advised to apply for bail at the High Court due to the gravity of his offence.

Prosecutor Ms Rutendo Manhimanzi alleges that on November 11 this year, Timba and his accomplices hatched a plan to rob Chiyangwa, an airtime dealer.
Armed with a pistol, they proceeded to the Parkade, corner Nelson Mandela and Sam Nujoma where Chiyangwa had parked his vehicle, a Mazda 3.
They introduced themselves as cops and produced police identity cards.

They accused Chiyangwa of dealing in dangerous drugs before telling him that he was under arrest.
They further demanded to search his bag containing US$28 000.

Chiyangwa, the State says, challenged them to properly identify themselves and Timba handcuffed him.

They took away his pistol, cash and car keys before jumping into his vehicle and speeding off.

He tried to run after them while shouting for help but they fired a shot at him.
Investigations led to Timba’s arrest.
