Cop’s murder suspects picked

the murder of a police inspector at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre on Sunday.

The deceased has since been identified as Inspector Petros Mutedza (42) who was based at Borrowdale Police Station.
Inspector Mutedza, who met his fate while on duty as officer-in-charge of a police reaction group, was killed by suspected MDC-T supporters while his colleague sustained injuries.

The pair had gone to investigate an illegal meeting, which MDC-T youths were holding at the shopping centre.
Although police could not be drawn into commenting last night, sources in the force said the suspects were assisting with investigations.

MDC-T said police had arrested scores of its members and their families at their homes and workplaces.

“The party has only managed to ascertain some of those arrested to include Last Maengahama, an MDC national executive member and resident of Glen View, and his three brothers, Stanley, Edison and Lazarus Maengahama and Odius, Lloyd and Precious Chitanda all related to Glen View North chairperson of the party Mrs Chitanda.
“Also picked were Mavis Madzokere, the wife of a Glen View councillor, Tungamirai Madzokere and Ollyn Madzokere, her sister-in-law.
The two were picked at their home.

“Stefan Takaedzwa was picked outside the MDC headquarters, Harvest House (Monday afternoon) on the same allegations,” the party said in a statement.
MDC-T claims the police officers were attacked by revellers and not its supporters.

Chief Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena, yesterday said: “We are still carrying out investigations. Once arrests have been made, we will let you know.”
Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday said Insp Mutedza worked at Borrowdale Police Station and stayed at Mabelreign Police Camp where mourners are gathered.
He is survived by his wife and three children.

MORE MDCT- VIOLENCE

“The deceased was the officer-in-charge (administration) at Borrowdale Police Station and at the time of his death he was officer-in-charge Provincial Reaction Group,” he said.
Supt Phiri said the other policeman who was injured in the attack was treated and discharged from hospital.

“We are, however, still continuing with our investigations on the case and no arrests have been made,” he said.
The situation was normal when The Herald visited Glen View Monday evening.

Residents said police patrolled the area in the morning.
“People are going through their day-to-day businesses and we only saw the police in the morning but up to now they haven’t returned. Obviously they were looking for the hooligans,” said one resident who requested anonymity.

After the fatal attack, shops were closed for hours as owners feared the rowdy youths would start looting.
The youths reportedly attacked the policemen with steel chairs and stones. It is said the party youths occasionally hold meetings in front of Munyarari Nightclub at the shopping centre.

On Sunday, MDC-T spokesperson Mr Douglas Mwonzora confirmed that there were skirmishes at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre involving his party supporters.
“I received something like that. Our preliminary investigations indicate that the police attacked patrons at a bar,” he said.

Sources at the shopping centre told The Herald that rowdy MDCT youths, some of them clad in party regalia, attacked the policemen with stones after they went to check on the meeting.
The sources said one of the policemen was hit by a chair in the head before the youths started kicking him while he lay unconscious.
The mob reportedly dispersed after hearing that a police reinforcement was on its way.
