Police have identified 13 of the 14 people who died in the accident involving a cross-border Zupco bus and a haulage truck along the Harare-Nyamapanda Highway on Monday.
The 13 victims are Beater Moyo (41) of Mount Pleasant, Thandiwa Madya (28) of Mbare, Alice Chipo Mabvuma (40) of Seke, Jacqueline Ngwerume (27) of Old Highfield, Josephine Zimowa (46) of Avondale, Madi Filaju (67) of Kwekwe, Acqueline Ndau (66) of Bulawayo and Mposa Stanley Sitende (68) of Chinhoyi.
Others are Taurai Kumbi James (36) of Chinhoyi, Idris Bare (24) of Kuwadzana 5, Calista Mugero (50) of Marondera, Jacqueline Ndoro (age not given) of Bulawayo and Robert Mukandawire (address not given).
National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi urged motorists to obey road rules and regulations, especially during the holiday period.
“As the nation commemorates the Heroes and Defence Forces holiday coupled with the closure of schools, motorists are urged to observe all road rules and regulations,” he said.
The accident involving the Zupco bus which was travelling from Malawi to Harare and a Nyamapanda-bound haulage truck occurred at the 22-kilometre peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Obert Mpofu said yesterday that the Government was concerned with the increasing spate of road accidents and fatalities.
“I am, therefore, appealing to all our road users to use the roads wisely and observe all traffic regulations,” he said.
“I would like in particular to appeal to operators of passenger carrying public service vehicles, as well as private motorists, not to use defective and unroadworthy vehicles, in an effort to maximise profits during the holidays.”
Dr Mpofu said his ministry would deal decisively with any operators whose drivers behaved in a manner that disregards the sanctity of human life.
