HARARE City Council has been blamed for failure to attend to burst sewers timeously.
Raw sewage has become a perennial problem in most high-density suburbs like Highfield, Dzivaresekwa, Chitungwiza, Kambuzuma and Mbare.
In an interview with H-Metro, Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations of Residents Trust (ZNOART) director, Vangiranai Muzenda, said Council was to blame for raw sewage flowing in high-density suburbs.
“Council workers are not being supervised when carrying out their duties.
“They also do not follow up on complaints raised by residents.
“The other issue is the unavailability of water, which causes the blockage of sewer pipes,” said Muzenda.
He said the Council is putting the public’s health at risk.
“Poor waste management, especially during the rainy seasons, can lead to cases of cholera and typhoid, particularly in the high-density suburbs.
“Council has a tendency of blaming other local authorities without providing solutions to their own problems.
“Change of mindset is needed so that everyone knows that the whole nation will be affected if we do not act.
“Council is to blame because residents are not allowed to work on burst pipes without Harare City Council’s authority,” he said.
He blamed the city fathers for failing to clear garbage in time, resulting in it blocking the drainage systems.
