CHINHOYI Municipality bosses have come under fire from the residents after purchasing a malfunctioning earthmover.
The heavy equipment, which was procured three months ago, is not working since it has some defects.
It cost US$28 300 but it doesn’t have rippers.
Angry residents have called upon the municipality to return the earthmover to the supplier.
Jesper Matonga, of Cold Stream, castigated the local authority for the boob.
“These guys at Council are taking residents for a ride. How can they purchase a earthmover that does not function? This is a circus at its best,” said Matonga.
Grace Kangoma, from Chikonohono suburb, described the Council’s move as a big disappointment.
“It’s a shame. How can one in their sane mind purchase a malfunctioning earthmover?
“They must return it to the supplier,” she said.
A Councillor, who preferred anonymity, said the local authority needed to be thorough, when purchasing Council equipment.
Council Works Committee chairman, Councillor Ishmael Madyavanhu, told H-Metro the committee sat on Monday and resolved to return the earthmover to the supplier.
He said the issue had become a very controversial one.
“We had a meeting where we deliberated for almost an hour,” said Madyavanhu.
“However, at the end of the meeting, we agreed that the issue be discussed at a full ordinary Council meeting for a resolution to be passed for the return of the earthmover.
“What is very saddening is that we bought the earthmover, for it to perform its duties, but when it’s not working, it does not do any justice to both Council and residents.”
Madyavanhu said the earthmover has a problem with the sensor cable, which is malfunctioning.
“The earthmover arrived in Chinhoyi on April 28 and up until now it’s not working,” he said.
