Council clinic turned into brothel

Harare City Council’s Chitubu Clinic in Glen Norah has reportedly been turned into a brothel.

The construction of the clinic was initiated during the tenure of former Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni, but up to now, the project has been lying idle despite that only a few touch ups are required.

The clinic situated at the busy Chitubu shopping centre in Glen Norah and is now said to be a sex haven with ladies of the night taking turns to use the facility.

Investigations revealed that sex workers were using the rooms at the back of the clinic which has some sections with window panes.

Mr Anorld Kuzeya said the situation was appalling and claimed that even security guards were now working in cahoots with the sex workers.

“Sometimes there are two security guards who roam around the area. Both seem to be cashing in from the sex workers whom they charge fees ranging from US$1 for the brief use of the facility,” he said.

A businessman who operates at the area who declined to be named said council should quickly open the facility to prevent its further abuse.

“Sex workers are housing their clients at the satellite clinic at night. There is no lighting at the facility which makes it an appropriate venue for them as it will be dark all over,” said the businessman.

Mrs Agnes Mahenya pleaded for the opening of the clinic.

“We are travelling a long distance to get health services yet the clinic has been lying idle for years.

“From the look of things, only a few things need to be done but it has been like that for years.

“If the council has failed they should either look for a partner or approach the Government,” she said.

City council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme yesterday could neither confirm nor deny that the clinic was being used as a brothel.

“We are investigating reports that there is no security at times. This is one of the projects earmarked for completion by mid-year. Only a few things need to be done on the project,” he said.
