Council introduces new parking system

Harare City Council has partnered a South African company, Smart Park Africa, to introduce per minute prepaid parking system. Currently, motorists are paying a blanket parking fee of $1 per hour. In a statement yesterday, City of Harare said the new parking system would be launched on Monday. “An in-vehicle device called ‘Smart Park Meter’ will be issued to each motorist,” reads part of the statement.

“This meter is a top-up-and- go gadget — accordingly, we are gradually migrating from a cash based on-street parking system to a fully-integrated cashless based platform.” The new system according to the statement, would address the challenges of delays and illegal parking marshals.

“This package is a prepaid cashless based parking solution, which offers convenience to our regular and casual motorists.” For one to get the new parking device, the motorist has to fill in a lease form after which he will pay $10 before being issued with the parking device.

Council has been losing thousands of dollars to some parking marshals who have been colluding with motorists to pay less. However, city officials were non-committal on explaining what was to become of the other deal they entered into with Easy Park, another South African company.
