Council seeks alternative water supplies

Shurugwi Town Council is looking for alternative water supplies to augment its water reticulation system amid revelations that its water supply dam, Gwenoro was now at 31 percent. In an interview, the town secretary, Mr Solomon Siziba said they were now seeking partners and donors to help them solve the town’s water crisis.

“Our water supply source, Gwenoro Dam is now at 31 percent and the water levels there continue to dwindle every day. What it means is that as the local authority, we need to find other alternatives to augment this and we have been seeking partners and donors who can help us find a lasting solution,” he said.

Mr Siziba said the town needs about 2000 cubic litres of water per day but they were getting half of the mount due to the pumping challenges.

He said the Zimbabwe National Water Supply Authority (Zinwa) which supplies the local authority with raw water was failing to pump enough for the town.

“Due to the low water levels at the dam, they (Zinwa ) are now failing to meet our demand and the result has been shortages of water supplies in the town,”

“We are getting about half of what we require as a town and the situation is not good,” he said.
Mr Siziba said the town was rapidly expanding and the town’s water and sewer reticulation infrastructure needs a complete overhaul.

He said they were negotiating with some private land developing companies that were operating in Shurugwi to help upgrade the town’s water and sewer infrastructure.

“The town is rapidly growing there are a lot of developments taking place with new suburbs coming. What that means is that as a town, we need to upgrade our infrastructure and we have been engaging private land developers to this end,” he said.
