Government after Water Resources Development and Management Minister Samuel Sipepa Nkomo ordered city officials to back off the project.
A report submitted by Harare Water department to the Ministry of Finance shows that Kunzvi Dam requires US$539 million while Musami Dam requires US$886 million. The money for both dams is needed urgently.
Musami is expected to yield 450 million litres of water daily and Kunzvi 250 million litres.
Harare Mayor Muchadeyi Masunda confirmed plans to pursue Musami Dam. “If he insists Kunzvi is his baby we have to seriously look at Musami Dam,” he said.
He urged Minister Nkomo to review the tender awarded to Mr John Mapondera’s Kunzvi Water Development Corporation saying the company had failed. “Time has come for (Minister) Nkomo to acknowledge that the people he is working with will not make anything happen,” he said.
He said Government should cede the contract to council. “The bottom line is we have greater capacity to leverage financing than Government,” he said.
But Mr Mapondera said the city’s threats were not new.
