Council suspends water shedding

Bulawayo City Council has temporarily suspended water shedding during the festive season from Monday until New Year’s Day to celebrate the unveiling the statue of late Vice President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo.President Mugabe is expected to officiate at the unveiling of the statue tomorrow on Unity Day.

In a statement yesterday, Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Martin Kizack Moyo said the water shedding schedule would be temporarily suspended throughout the city during the holidays from December, 23, 2013 to January, 1, 2014.

He said the schedule would be resumed on Wednesday, 2 January 2014.
“The relaxation of the water shedding schedule is to celebrate the unveiling of the statue of the late Vice-President, Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo and the official opening of the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport on Sunday, December, 22, 2013,” he said.

Clr Moyo said the city welcomed many visitors during the festive season and he hoped the relaxation of the schedule would further enable residents to celebrate Christmas without any challenges.

“Residents are however encouraged to continue to conserve water at all times in view of the low volumes of water currently being held in the city’s supply dams,” he said.

Reacting to the announcement yesterday, residents advised the Bulawayo City Council to engage their power utility counterparts to follow suit.

“Can you please tell Zesa to do the same,” said Sithandekile Moyo, a resident at Pumula suburb.
