THE mother of all shows will be held next week Friday as Kalawa Jazmee crew invade Bulawayo at Queens Sports Club. If last year’s offering by the accomplished stable is anything to go by, this year’s gig promises to be a hot contender for show of the year. Like a sore thumb, the Kalawa show sticks out among the high number of shows pencilled in for the festive season as the show at the top of the entertainment calendar.

A total of 12 artistes from the extremely talented Kalawa stable will perform at the gig. These include the house guru and the ace himself Oskido, high kicking Doctor Malinga, Professor, DJ Zinhle, Nketa-born Berita, Tony Digital, Uhuru, Candy and Pepsi.

Dr Malinga was the toast last year with his “kick like a ninja antics” proving to be the dance of the season earning him  plaudits in every home.

The Kalawa label set the trend for urban music and culture in South Africa as far back as 1993 when Boom Shaka burst on to the scene.
The stable can be divided into three categories such as solo artistes, groups and DJs.

The groups that have gone through the Kalawa stable include the pioneers Boom Shaka of 1993, then Brothers of Peace (BOP), followed by Trompies, Alaska and Mafikizolo.

Solo artistes include Thebe, Spikiri, Busiswa, M’jokes and Theo Kgonsikwe to mention but a few. The endless list of DJs includes Christos (umlungu omnyama), DJ Oskido, Vetkook and Mahoota and the first lady of Kalawa – Zinhle.

This year tracks like Ngoku, Happy, Jukuja, send revellers onto the dance floor when DJs play them in night clubs and parties. Kalawa as we know it today started with Don Laka, Bruce Sebitlo and Oskido Mdlongwa then later became a joint venture with Jazmee (Mandla Spikiri, Mahoota Sibika and M’jokes) gave birth to the brand: Kalawa Jazmee, with Boom Shaka as their first act.

Boom Shaka, a foursome which comprised Lebo Mathosa, Thembi Seete, Junior Sokhela and Theo Nhlengethwa, released their first album in 1993, featuring It’s About Time.

The Big “O” Oskido will torch off the mega show with his All White party at the Stop Over bar on Christmas Day. According to the promoter Vusumuzi Siqalaba, the turntable master will entertain fans until the break of dawn.

“The theme for the party is white to embrace Christmas and sow seeds of peace and unity in the Southern African region. Fans are encouraged to also wear white so that they blend in,” he said.
