COUNCIL TO CHARGE INTEREST

Harare City Council has issued a warning to residents advising them to clear their outstanding balances urgently to prevent interest being charged.

The council will begin charging interest again on unpaid balances starting this month, as required by Section 274(2) of the Urban Councils Act Chapter 29:15.

“City of Harare hereby notifies residents that it will resume charging of interest on outstanding balances starting from June 1. Residents are encouraged to clear their bills in order to avoid inconveniences,” read a statement by the council.

Council spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende, stated that outstanding bills needed to be settled to fund service delivery.

Harare City Council has warned residents to clear their outstanding balances as soon as possible to avoid paying interest.

Council spokesperson, Innocent Ruwende, said they need the money to fund service delivery.

“The Urban Councils Act stipulates that we should charge interest on outstanding balances because we won’t be able to provide services due to loss of value. So, we are urging residents to pay their bills timeously,” he said.

The government recently foiled the council’s efforts to demand payment in foreign currency for certain bills.
