HARARE City council is set to come up with transfer stations in most suburbs in order to cut the distances travelled by refuse compactors to dispose of waste.
The new system will improve operation efficiencies in waste collection, as refuse compactors will not spend more time on the road to dump, but on refuse collection.
This comes as the City is migrating to the linear model of refuse collection, which it is currently using to Integrated Solid Waste Management System.
The transfer stations are location-based dumpsites with a 5km radius from the areas where refuse is being collected before being taken to Pomona dump site.
Acting head amenities, Engineer Keith Mapunzamoyo, during a service delivery meeting at Kuwadzana 8 Council Primary School (Ward 44), said there was need to separate transportation and collection.
“We need to separate transportation and collection. If you look at ward 44 right now, the distance to Pomona is an average of 25km the time it will take to go door-to-door and go to dispose of the refuse will take three hours,” he said.
“If we introduce a transfer station that is 5km from the location, the time to drive to dispose of it is less.
“This will allow the refuse collection faster as the dumpsite would be closer.”
