HARARE City Council will soon be fining telecommunications companies for the damage being caused on some of the city’s water pipes during the installation of fibre optic cables.Residents in Highfield, Harare were recently left stranded after one of the pipes connecting them to the city’s main water supply line was vandalised by one of the companies.
Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said repairing the damage was too costly for council hence they were considering fining the companies.
“We might have to fine the telecommunications companies for the immense damage they are causing on some of the pipes. Council has been meeting the costs of repairs and it is high time the companies are held responsible.
“They are also failing to notify us of the problems in time thereby worsening the situation as residents have to bear protracted shortages of water,” said Dr Mahachi.
He said the problem in Highfield had since been rectified and efforts were being made to calculate the total cost of repairs before submitting the bills to the responsible companies.
Harare Water director Engineer Christopher Zvobgo said city fathers were working hard to improve the water situation.
