HARARE City Council has warned space barons to remove their shacks at the Simon Muzenda Street (formerly Fourth Street) Bus Terminus.

In a statement, the Council warned space barons erecting illegal structures at the terminus to pull them down immediately.

“Council has noted with concern the invasion of Fourth Street Bus Terminus by space barons who are creating an illegal market.

“The City is urging the space barons to remove their shacks before council moves in to assist,” reads part of the statement

In addition, council urged residents and vendors not to pay anyone to use tables at the terminus, saying it’s extortion.

“By this notice members of the public and vendors are being urged not to pay anyone to use tables at the illegal market.

“Only council officials are mandated to allocate vending space.

“We accept that the informal sector is critical in income generation, but there is a need to balance that with order and compliance with by-laws.

“Council recognises the important role played by the informal sector in the national economy, especially during this period in which our country is facing macro-economic challenges.”
