A Councillor from Insiza in Matabeleland South Province is in hot soup after she was dragged to court for allegedly defrauding 10 vendors of US$513 after she promised to facilitate the processing of vending licences for them.

Councillor Nomsa Moyo from Backwaters Farm in Ward 23, Insiza Rural District Council, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza facing a criminal abuse of office charge.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded out of custody to 18 November on free bail.

The court heard that from May until the end of October this year Moyo would use her influence as a public office bearer and collect money from vendors promising to facilitate the processing of vending licences for them.

She had reportedly promised to give a batch of five vendors licences by the end of August but after that she allegedly became evasive.

She then promised to give the other batch the licences by the end of September but failed to do so. The vendors then reported the matter to the police leading to her arrest.
