Addressing residents in Ward 7 in Harare recently, Minister Chombo bemoaned the character of councillors elected in the March 29 2008 elections. The ward is part of the Mount Pleasant National Assembly constituency where Zanu-PF’s Jason Passadi will face MDC-T’s Jameson Timba in the election. Cde Beadle Gwasira is standing for Zanu-PF in the council elections against the MDC-T’s Francis Mufambi.
Prospective candidates were expected to attend but Mr Timba and Mr Mufambi boycotted the meeting. “When they came into power, only two out of 46 councillors elected then had cars but five years later they have three or more cars,” said Minister Chombo. “When we tried to assist by offering accommodation they said they should buy council houses at 20 percent of the total value. They tried to manipulate officials and grabbed houses from under-privileged members of the communities,” said Minister Chombo.
