Councils warned on rates

Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo said his ministry would not tolerate unjustified high bills.

“The ministry is disappointed that the majority of rural and urban local authorities are still to submit their 2011 budgets for approval,” he said.

The minister said the budgets should be approved timeously to ensure that revenue collection commences early.

He said only Kariba, Chegutu and Gokwe local authorities had their budgets approved.
Dr Chombo said although his ministry had set November as the deadline for submission of budgets, only 17 out of all urban local authorities had heeded the call.

He said budgets submitted to date would only be gazetted next month, meaning the councils could start collecting revenue in March.-The Herald
