Countdown to UNWTO indaba begins

will be held at the Victoria Falls Bridge, the border of the two countries, and will mark the official confirmation of the hosting of the UNWTO General Assembly by Zambia and Zimbabwe.
President Mugabe and President Michael Sata will sign the agreement on behalf of Zimbabwe and Zambia respectively, in the presence of UNWTO Secretary-General Mr Taleb Rifai. Zimbabwe and Zambia won the bid to co-host the 2013 UNWTO General Assembly.
Mr Rifai has officially confirmed his visit to Zimbabwe and Zambia from May 28-30.
He is also expected to make the final inspection of the tourism facilities and preparations of the two venues of the UNWTO General Assembly meeting.
President Mugabe is also expected to sign the golden book of tourism as confirmation for the UNWTO ambassadorial role recently bestowed on him. This is the second time Africa is hosting the UNWTO General Assembly, the first being Senegal in 2005.
Delegates from at least 176 countries are expected for the meeting, which is set to become the biggest endorser of the country’s new tourism brand: “Zimbabwe — A World of Wonders”.
The UNWTO plays a role in promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism, paying particular attention to the interests of developing countries.
It also encourages the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, with a view to ensuring that member countries, tourist destinations and businesses maximise the positive economic, social and cultural effects of tourism and fully reap its benefits, while minimising its negative  impacts. — New Ziana.
