TWO men have been sentenced to five years imprisonment each for fraud and theft.
One year was suspended on condition of good behaviour and another year suspended on condition they restitute the complainant US$1,232.
They will serve an effective three-year jail term.
ZRP CID spokesperson, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, said Chamunorwa Paul Anesu and Nakai Hodera were jailed for producing counterfeit receipts.
“On June 15, 2025, the accused persons, working in connivance with Muchineripi Mupunyukwi and Brendon who are still at large, hatched a plan to steal from the complainant.
“Pursuant to their plan, Chamunorwa Paul Anesu brought some groceries from a retail shop worth US$62,99.
“In a deliberate attempt to defraud the complainant, they generated a counterfeit receipt indicating a total of US$2962,99 in purchased goods.
“Chamunorwa Paul Anesu went on to use the falsified receipt to claim and dispatch goods far exceeding the value of their initial purchase with the assistance of Nakai Hodera, a shop employee.
“The offence came to light after an alert till operator noticed the discrepancies between the dispatched goods and the quantities actually purchased.
“She quickly raised alarm which resulted in the swift investigations of the matter and the arrest of Nakai Hodera and Chamunorwa Paul Anesu.
“Further investigations unearthed that the accused person had, on several occasions, used the same modus operandi to steal,” said Det Insp Muteweri.
The two appeared at the Mbare Magistrate Court where Chamunorwa Paul Anesu and Nakai Hodera were found guilty.
